Direct answer: OpenAI is testing Sponsored Agents with select U.S. advertisers. After a person clicks a ChatGPT ad, they can choose to start a clearly labeled conversation with a business-sponsored agent, ask follow-up questions and then continue to the advertiser’s site. That changes the conversion surface from a single click into an interactive product experience.
The ad unit is becoming an interface
OpenAI announced the Sponsored Agents test on September 16 as part of a broader expansion of ChatGPT Ads. The company says the sponsored conversation is clearly labeled, distinct from ChatGPT’s independent answers and separate from the original conversation a user started in ChatGPT. The test is currently limited to select advertisers in the United States.
The important design change is that the ad itself no longer has to carry the entire persuasion burden. A conventional ad compresses the proposition into a headline, visual and call to action. A sponsored agent can handle questions, objections, fit and product detail after interest is established.
This creates a new funnel: impression → intent → dialogue → action
For advertisers, conversational advertising adds a state between click and landing page. That state can be useful because many high-consideration purchases fail when a person has one unresolved question: compatibility, dimensions, pricing conditions, delivery, configuration or whether a product fits a specific use case.
But the new state also creates a new class of failure. A persuasive interface can become dangerous if it invents product claims, hides uncertainty or behaves as if the sponsor’s interests are the same as the user’s. The interface therefore needs visible sponsorship, reliable grounding in approved business data and a clean path out to the advertiser’s own site.
Conversion optimization now includes answer quality
In a conversational ad, creative performance is no longer only about click-through rate. Teams will need to understand whether the agent answered the actual purchase question, whether the user had to repeat context, where conversations ended and which answers led to qualified downstream action.
That creates a new optimization stack: retrieval quality, product-catalog freshness, response policy, latency, escalation and analytics. Marketing, product and customer-support infrastructure start to overlap. The landing page does not disappear, but it becomes one step in a broader interactive funnel.
Natural-language campaign operations compress the marketer workflow too
The same announcement expands AI on the advertiser side. OpenAI says marketers can use natural-language prompts in ChatGPT with an Ads Manager plugin to create, update and analyze campaigns. Ads Manager can suggest copy and imagery, while advertisers retain review and editing control. OpenAI also announced initial HubSpot and Shopify integrations.
The pattern matters: AI is entering both sides of the market. The user gets a conversational buying surface; the advertiser gets a conversational operating surface. That symmetry suggests advertising platforms may increasingly compete on how much workflow they can compress, not just on inventory and targeting.
The trust boundary has to stay obvious
The product requirement is straightforward: a sponsored agent must never feel like an invisible extension of the assistant’s neutral answer. OpenAI explicitly separates the sponsored conversation from independent ChatGPT responses. That distinction should remain legible in every state—entry, conversation, recommendation and handoff.
If conversational ads work, the winning design will not be the agent that talks the most. It will be the one that resolves uncertainty quickly, shows whose interests it represents and makes the next step obvious without pretending the commercial context is something else.
A sponsored agent needs a stricter content contract than a landing page
A landing page is reviewed before publication. A conversational unit generates a new response for every question, so the review target becomes the response system itself: approved sources, prohibited claims, freshness rules, escalation behavior and the wording used when the answer is unknown. Product catalogs, prices, availability and eligibility conditions can change quickly. The safest response may be a direct handoff to the advertiser rather than a fluent answer assembled from stale data.
That contract should also prevent the agent from inventing comparisons about competitors or inferring sensitive traits to intensify persuasion. Clear sponsorship solves only the first trust problem—who is speaking. Grounding and policy determine whether what is said remains defensible.
The useful metric is resolved commercial intent
Conversation length is an ambiguous success signal. A long exchange may indicate engagement, confusion or repeated failure. Better measurement separates questions resolved, unsupported-answer rate, handoff quality, downstream conversion and post-click correction. Advertisers should also know where the agent declined to answer, because those gaps reveal missing product information or claims that require human review.
The strongest sponsored agent will likely behave more like a compact, accountable product specialist than an infinitely persuasive salesperson. It should shorten the distance between genuine intent and a verified next step while making the commercial boundary impossible to miss.
Practical takeaways
- Treat the sponsored conversation as a product surface, not a longer ad copy field.
- Measure resolution quality and qualified action, not only click-through rate.
- Ground answers in current catalog, policy and availability data.
- Keep sponsorship and the boundary from independent assistant answers visible.
- Design a fast handoff to the advertiser’s owned experience when the user is ready.
